Following this week’s total solar eclipse in the US, many who witnessed the spectacular event fear that they may have damaged their eyes from looking directly at the sun without proper protection.

As a result, this optical illusion is doing the rounds on the internet.

The simple procedure involves staring at this Amsler grid, taken from the National Eye Institute, which tests your optic nerve.

It works best if you print it instead of looking at it on the screen.

Cover one eye, then look at the dot in the center of the grid, then repeat with the other eye.

You’ll know if you need an eye exam if any of the lines become wavy or disappear, or if you notice any other differences, such as odd-sized frames, dark areas, or blurred edges.

An eye exam at a high-end optician can mean paying £20 or more, but you can actually get a free eye exam at Tesco or by using this link at Vision Express.

If you’re under 16 (or 19 and studying full-time), over 60 or have a medical condition, you may qualify for free eye exams, which are free for everyone in Scotland.

Opticians are required by law to give you a copy of your prescription, so even if you have paid for it, don’t feel obligated to spend a fortune on frames and lenses at the same optician.

DOUBLE TAKE These optical illusion photos will have you scratching your head… can you figure out what’s really going on?
