Complaint of a dismissed employee of the National Foundation

Officers quickly arrested a 16-year-old boy and a man in his 60s after the tree was found cut down early Thursday morning.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and was released on bail yesterday while police continued to investigate the alleged crime.

The man remained in custody overnight.

Devastated locals are already talking about what they think led to the destruction of the tree.

MailOnline reported that some residents believed the person who felled the tree was a National Trust worker who had been sacked.

Locals reportedly believed that the person had stolen a chainsaw and other equipment and cut down the tree in revenge.

Others said the vandal must have been “a professional who knew where to cut” on a windy night.

They claimed the person knew the 83 mph storm Agnes could have masked the sound of the chainsaw.

Sick TikTok joke

Officers are also said to be investigating whether the famous tree was cut down as part of a sick prank on TikTok.

MailOnline reported last night that the possibility of such a hoax was being investigated.

Speaking after the arrest, Northumbria Police’s Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Fenney-Menzies said: “‘Although another arrest has been made, this investigation is still at an early stage, and we will continue to encourage any member of the public with information that may help get in touch.

“If you have seen or heard something suspicious that could be of interest to us – please contact us.

“I would also like to remind the public that this remains a live investigation and therefore avoid any speculation both in the community and on social media.

“Any piece of information – no matter how small or insignificant you think it is – could prove absolutely crucial to our inquiries.”

Tenant peasant evicted from the land

Conversations in the local pub suggest the farmer took matters into his own hands after the eviction.

A bookie in a local pub told The Telegraph: “I heard it was a tenant farmer who had been evicted from his land.

– He threatened to cut down the tree.

Northumbria Police confirmed they are keeping an “open mind” as the investigation continues.

Northumberland National Park Authority is also working with officers to unravel the mystery and they believe it was “deliberately” cut down.
