I pride myself on clean floors. After all, I review a lot of vacuums – both robot and stick – for a living. But there’s something about carpet cleaner that makes your floor dramatically cleaner.

I’ve always associated carpet cleaners with rentals: a heavy, specialized appliance that you don’t really need in your home. Tineco sent me their Carpet One Smart Carpet Cleaner to try and it has changed my whole outlook on appliances. Now I consider it as important as a regular vacuum cleaner.

Powerful cleaning even for the smelliest mess

Let me start by explaining why I needed a carpet cleaner so badly. My cat, sweet as she is, suffers from several GI issues. This means that accidents often happen on my carpet. Although I always remove stains, it usually involves scrubbing the floor with fabric spray and a brush.

Carpet One reduces the time it takes to remove a stain from a carpet to just a few seconds. No throwing away paper towels, no toxic cleaning materials, and no putting a litter box in the newly cleaned area to keep the cat away until it dries.

Carpet One has built-in sensors (Tineco’s proprietary iLoop Smart Sensor) that detect how dirty your floor is. The LED light on the top of the vacuum cleaner lights up. It’s usually blue — but the appearance of red means more dirt and debris has been exposed. The longer the line, the more dirt.

There are four cleaning methods to deal with clutter:

  • Automatic mode adjusts the amount of spray used depending on how dirty the floor is.
  • Maximum mode sprays as much as it can. This mode burns the water tank faster, but I find it the most efficient.
  • The drying mode disables any water spray and instead blows warm air to dry the carpet after you’re done.
  • The additional mode is self-explanatory: it activates when you use the attached hose attachment to clean stairs, furniture or other areas.

Carpet One uses hot air in each mode, roughly between 160 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit. This heat is used to ensure a more thorough cleaning; according to Tinec, it helps dissolve dirt and activate the cleaning solution.

User experience

I have used Carpet One almost daily since it arrived. While I haven’t tried cleaning the entire living room with it, I have cleaned large sections of the floor with great success.

Carpet One reduces the time it takes to remove a stain from a carpet to just a few seconds.

First of all, it is quite a heavy device when the water tank is full, especially when it is vacuuming dirty water. If you’ve never used a carpet cleaner before, you’ll probably be horrified at what color the water turns after it runs through your carpet; in my case it looked like dark gray milk.

Phew, right?

Note that this is after frequent vacuuming. The fact is that most vacuum cleaners simply don’t penetrate deep enough to clean on the same level as a carpet cleaner, and the proof is in the gross carpet pudding that fills the dirty water tank.

There are two tanks to worry about: the clean water tank, which is located roughly in the middle of the vacuum cleaner housing, and the dirty water tank just above the inlet. The fresh water tank is easy to refill — just lift the cap and fill to the mark — but it doesn’t go very far in Max Mode. Auto mode is suitable for most messes, as it will automatically spray more water if needed.

Most vacuum cleaners simply don’t penetrate deep enough to clean on the same level as a carpet cleaner.

The dirty water tank looks bigger, but only fills about 3/5 before it is considered full. Once full, the Carpet One will shut down until you empty the tank. However, you should empty it after each cleaning cycle, and Carpet One’s automatic voice reminds you to do so. It’s not just a matter of cleanliness — if you forget to empty the tank, that water starts to stink.

Carpet One draws in enough air that a full tank of dirty water will spread a horrible smell throughout the house when it’s on, so take the time to drain the tank when you’re done cleaning your carpets. I suggest you do it in the toilet and flush afterwards.

As for the app, I find it mostly unnecessary. The best smart features are on the device, like the dirt sensor. The app tracks how long you’ve been cleaning on a given day, which I suppose could be useful if you want to check if someone is actually cleaning; keeping track of the children’s chores, perhaps?

The only other advantage I found in the app was the Settings menu. The Carpet One’s built-in voice can be quite loud, and there’s no way to mute it on the carpet cleaner itself. You can adjust the volume through the app or disable the voice completely. The app also provides the ability to download a digital version of the product manual, perform firmware updates and change the voice pack.

Most of the negative experiences I’ve had with Carpet One have been user error. The results of the cleaning cannot be disputed — it removed all traces of stains from my carpets, except for one small area. A year ago I accidentally stepped on the carpet with a muddy boot, and anyone who knows Georgia knows that the red clay leaves stains that are virtually impossible to remove.

Although Carpet One didn’t completely clean the stain, it’s much harder to see now.

What’s in the box?

Carpet One comes mostly disassembled, but it is not difficult to assemble. It took me less than 10 minutes to install the carpet cleaner. In the box you will find:

  • Solution for deodorizing and cleaning carpets
  • Cleaning tool
  • 2-in-1 Nozzle
  • Sponge filter
  • Additional hose

An additional hose attaches as needed and that was my main pain point with the Carpet One. It took a few tries to figure out exactly how the hose was connected to the cleaner before the diagram made sense, but I later found out there was a video that explained it better.

The included cleaning solution is mandatory. I tried cleaning the carpet with just water and it did a noticeably worse job than when I added the solution to the water tank. It’s only two caps per water tank, and the solution itself claims to be non-toxic to children and pets. I haven’t tested it, obviously, but it’s good to know that Tineco has addressed those concerns.

The cleaning solution appears to be mostly water, with less than 5 percent of various other chemicals (none of which sounded particularly safe.)

Our opinion

Tineco Carpet One Smart carpet cleaner is an absolute must for disinfecting your carpets and removing hard-to-clean stains. Although the companion app doesn’t provide much functionality, it’s better than nothing, and the smart features are mostly on the device itself.

Is there a better alternative?

Simply put: no. The lack of a smart carpet cleaner is something I’ve long lamented. There are some appliances that call themselves smart, like the Hoover Smartwash+, but they don’t have any real smart capabilities. The Tineco Carpet One Smart Carpet Cleaner is one of the few options I’ve ever seen.

How long will it last?

Most of the components inside the Carpet One can be replaced if they break, which definitely extends the longevity of the device. If something goes terribly wrong, Tineco offers a two-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

Should you buy it?

No question about it. If you want to keep your floors cleaner than anything a vacuum cleaner can achieve, you’ll want to invest in this smart carpet cleaner.
