Tom served as the company’s COO for two years, oversaw shoe creation for five years, and even Jay admitted that he was the “mind behind” the business. He also created the brand’s signature shoes, which became his biggest contribution to the brand’s growth.
They made the decision to enter the shoe market to compete with companies like Nike. However, things did not go as expected. In his NBA debut, Stephon Marbury put on his first shoe and injured his ankle after an awkward fall. After this mistake, Austin took over the creation of the AND1 signature shoes. His design eventually became very popular, even among NBA players. Vince Carter wore a pair of AND1 sneakers during his legendary dunk contest.
