Tom Garstang was born to father Richard Garstang.

Richard was born in South Africa in 1947 and grew up on a sheep farm in the central part of the KwaZulu-Natal province. He earned two of his three degrees in zoology from the University of Natal and spent the early years of his career working for various game reserves and the South African National Parks Authority.
