sedentary Work, too much time in front of screens… The French are too few to practice enough physical activity, according to a study published on Tuesday. These results, from data collected in metropolitan France between 2014 and 2016, have been published in the Bulletin épidémiologique hebdomadaire of public Health, France.

Less than three-quarters (71 %) of men and just over half (53 %) of women “met the WHO recommendations on physical activity”, or at least 2 hours and 30 minutes per week of activity of moderate intensity or 1 hour and 15 minutes of intense activity.

These results show an improvement in the proportion of men physically active compared to 2006-2007, but a fall in women, as in the previous survey, 63 % of both genders met the recommendations on physical activity, emphasise the authors.

The situation is even worse among children, with “only half of boys and a third of the girls” with sufficient exercise, at least 1 h per day with an intensity of “moderate to strong”, “no change since 2006”.

Screen : an increase more marked among women”

Among the “sedentary behaviours”, the survey notes in particular that “the daily time spent in front of screens has increased sharply in recent years, both in adults and children”.

Eight out of ten adults claimed to spend 3 h or more per day in front of a screen outside of their professional activity, compared to a little more than half (53 %) in 2006-2007, an increase more marked among women.” The percentage of children passing 2 hours or more in front of a screen each day is spent in the same period from 66 % to 77 %.

“It appears necessary to promote public health policies aimed jointly to increase the level of physical activity and to limit the level of physical inactivity of the population,” she says, even if it was not necessarily obvious during the confinement, in march and April, to promote physical activities.

physical inactivity, a risk factor for major non-communicable diseases

The survey recommends, in particular, the fight against social inequalities in access to physical activities and recreation, to develop the sport in schools and encourage the use of modes of transport “assets” to get to the school.

To determine whether the respondents are or are not reaching WHO recommendations, the researchers constructed an indicator of adapting these objectives. They consider as well as an adult met the recommendations of physical activity if it combines at least three days per week with at least 25 minutes of intense physical activity per day, or at least five days with at least 30 minutes of moderate activity daily.

physical activity is classified as intense when it is “dramatically speeds up the heart rate” (swimming, running, football…) and as moderate when it is “greatly speeds up” the frequency (such as walking, dancing, biking…) The authors remind us that “physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle are major risk factors of non-communicable diseases”.
