Toyota turns the HiLux pickup into a Tonka truck for the young at heart

One of the most brutally disappointing aspects of growing up is realizing that the Tonka trucks you played with as a kid are not street legal. The members of Toyota’s Australian division must feel the same, as they worked day and night to transform the HiLux pickup truck into an actual full-size Tonka that starts and drives.

The range-topping HiLux SR5 Double Cab — a model not sold in the United States — served as a blank canvas. Parts like the bumper, hood, tailgate and wheels were sent back to the parts bin and replaced with new components made specifically for the concept.

Notably, the front bumper gets a rugged look that echoes Tonka’s sandpit heroes, while the winch and strong alloy skid plate allow the HiLux to handle itself with ease even when the going gets really, really rough. It rides on 35-inch Tonka tires nestled under wide fenders, and suspension tweaks give it six extra inches of ground clearance. The snorkel attached to the A-pillar isn’t just there for show.

Fear not, the body is not made of plastic like the Tonka trucks you used to smash. However, the tailgate is made of carbon fiber, a material rarely found in the pickup truck segment due to its relative fragility. It features a pair of vents that improve fuel consumption by reducing drag. It’s an innovative solution, but the downside is that you won’t be able to fill the back with sand.

Power is provided by the HiLux’s standard 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine. The turbodiesel produces 174 horsepower and 309 Nft of torque, and sends power to all four wheels. We don’t know if the four is mated to a manual or automatic transmission, but we’ll assume it’s a stick to fulfill our childhood fantasies.

Toyota stresses that the HiLux is a Tonka-inspired concept and has no plans to turn it into a production model.
