Transformers Earthspark pronouns controversy explanation

In a short clip from Transformers: Earthspark shared on Libs of TikTok, Nightshade is introduced to Sam, who quickly shares their pronouns as “she/they.” Sam tells Nightshade that the world can be a scary place, so it’s hard to tell those who are safe from those who aren’t. However, Sam explains that he feels safe between his friends and those who identify as non-binary.

Nightshade, a non-binary character from the animated series Transformers: Earthspark, has caused controversy recently. The alien robot first appeared in 2022 when the series premiered on Paramount+. However, a short clip of Nightshade revealing his surrogates to Sam has gone viral on social media.

On Thursday, May 11, 2023, the right-wing Twitter account Libs of TikTok shared the clip, along with an anti-LGBTQ+ statement in the caption, which read: “They’re looking for their children.”

Nightshade seems unfamiliar with the concept of non-binary gender identity, leading Sam to clarify that it encompasses people who don’t strictly identify as male or female. Sam also takes the opportunity to apologize to Nightshade for making assumptions about his gender identity.

However, Nightshade responds positively, saying:

“I always knew my pronouns were correct, but what a wonderful word for a wonderful experience.”

The inclusion of characters from the LGBTQ+ community who use unconventional pronouns on the show met with opposition from most viewers. However, some people expressed concern about another issue. They believe that the idea that non-binary people or those who use gender-neutral pronouns can make the world a safer place is a dangerous concept, regardless of pronoun use.

On the other hand, non-binary viewers of Transformers: Earthspark have expressed their happiness for the debut of a character that represents them in the series. They praised the franchise for introducing a character who openly and confidently identifies as non-binary, stating that he touched their hearts and emphasizing the importance of representation.

Additionally, a small number of viewers pointed out that robots should not be gendered as they are machines and therefore neither male nor female.
