US Army soldier Travis King, who recently served time in a South Korean detention center, crossed the border into North Korea “without authorization” and is currently there, according to United Nations and US officials. Travis entered the terminal alone because the military escort couldn’t get past the checkpoint because they didn’t have a ticket. The officer stated that he was supposed to take off and land at Fort Bliss, Texas. Another official informed him that there were “pending proceedings for administrative separation due to a foreign conviction.” Instead, he left the terminal to tour the DMZ. It is not clear when he bought the ticket.
Travis was no longer in custody because he had served his sentence. There was no need to be escorted to the exit and no reason to worry that he wouldn’t be able to get on the plane. When Travis’s mother, Claudine, found out that her son had entered North Korea, she Claudine told ABC News that she was stunned.
“I don’t see Travis doing something like that,” Claudine Gates said.
Claudein said the military told him Tuesday morning that his son had defected to North Korea. She said the last time she heard from her son was “a few days ago,” when he told her she would be returning to her base at Fort Bliss soon. She added that she just wanted “him to come home.”
“We are very early in this event and there is still a lot we are trying to learn,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said of the situation. “What we do know is that one of our members who was on tour crossed the military demarcation line intentionally and without authorization. We believe he is in custody in the DPRK. We are closely monitoring and investigating the situation, working to notify the soldier’s relatives and committing to resolve this incident.”
Lloyd added: “I am absolutely very concerned for the well-being of our troops. We will continue to focus on this, and it will unfold over the next few days.”
A woman who toured with King said she initially thought her run was some kind of gimmick, and that she and others in the group couldn’t believe what had happened.
Travis’ jail time was the result of an altercation last year. In February, a court fined him 5 million won ($3,950) after he was found guilty of assaulting an unidentified person and damaging a police vehicle in Seoul last October, according to a transcript of the verdict obtained by The Associated Press.
