Two former French secret agents who were found guilty of treason to China were sentenced to eight and 12 years in prison in Paris on Friday, in a rare trial held behind closed doors.
The two men are former agents of the Directorate General for External Security (DGSE), France’s spy service. They work in counterintelligence. They were tried for “delivery of information to a foreign power”, “undermining the fundamental interests of the nation”, “intelligence cooperation with a foreign power”.

Pierre-Marie H., 69, a former civil servant for defense, was sentenced to 12 years in criminal prison. The prosecution sought a maximum sentence of 15 years against him. Henry M., 73 years old, a career soldier who spent most of his life in China, for his part was sentenced to 8 years in prison, while the state attorney’s office sought 10 years in prison against him.
The wife of Pierre-Marie H., who was accused of “concealing assets acquired by intelligence with a foreign power of such a nature as to harm the fundamental interests of the nation”, was sentenced to 4 years in prison, of which 2 years were suspended. The district court, composed only of professional judges, sentenced all three to an additional sentence of 10 years of deprivation of civil rights.
