UK woman marries herself, spends over ₹10 lakh on celebrations

A woman organized a very special and unusual celebration with her friends and family when she decided to marry herself. The British woman decided to stop waiting for the ‘right partner’ and tied the knot with herself. She also spent 10,000 pounds (almost ₹ 10 lakh), which she had been saving for the last 20 years, on the celebrations.

Sarah Wilkinson (42) hosted the wedding at Harvest House in Felixstowe, Suffolk, the BBC reports. She celebrated by saying 14 vows to herself in front of 40 of her closest family and friends.

Speaking about how those closest to her reacted to her decision, Wilkinson said they were not surprised to hear her ‘weird idea’. She added: “Nobody stopped laughing all day and everyone said they had an amazing time. Almost everyone said ‘Sara is such a good thing’.”

Why did she decide to marry herself?

Wilkinson turned 40 during the quarantine caused by the pandemic and decided to give herself a diamond engagement ring. Since then, she has been thinking about marrying herself for a long time, instead of waiting for ‘Mr. Right’.

“I think you get to a point where you think, ‘Maybe I won’t have this with my partner, but why would I miss it?’ That money was earmarked for my wedding – it was a case of it being there so why not use it for something I want to do,” she told the BBC.

How did Sarah Wilkinson celebrate her big day?

The bride came to the venue dressed in a traditional white dress decorated with sequins. As for the top of the cake, she chose a figurine of a bride kissing a frog. She also walked down the aisle with her mother to complete the wedding ceremony with her.

Wilkinson shared that she loved being the center of attention on her big day. “The ceremony was not an official wedding, but I had my wedding day,” she added.
