Last week, a painting by the late Chinese artist Sanyu sold at an auction in Hong Kong for more than $33 million, almost NOK 313 million.
The sale of the “Quatre Nus” artwork made Sanyu one of the most sought-after artists in Asia, more than 50 years after his death.

It is called the Chinese answer to “Matisse”. During most of his life as an artist, he received no attention for their works. But now there is interest from Asian collectors of time-lapse art.
From the bottom to the top
In the period from 2000 to 2019, the prize went to Sanyus’ paintings more than 1,100 percent, according to CNN. Mainland China and Hong Kong account for 91 percent of the market.
CNN shows Artprice.com where it can be seen that Sanyus’ work earned $109 million in 2019. This made him the 16th best-selling artist of the year. It’s a strong jump from his 873rd place in 2000.

Sanyu was born in 1895 and grew up in a wealthy family in China. He was one of the first Chinese artists to study in Paris in the 1920s, and was famous for his nude painting.
The title of “Chinese Matisse” is not, however, a title that he could boast of while he was alive. When he died in a gas leak in his Paris apartment in 1966, he was a relatively unknown artist.
Credit for his post-mortem recognition must be given to the Taiwanese art dealers who rediscovered his work, writing auksjonsbyrået Sotheby’s.
