Washington – The Senate in Washington is resisting the US government’s planned arms deals with Saudi Arabia. With 53 to 45 votes of the dominant Republican Party of President Donald Trump, the House of Representatives of Congress adopted two resolutions on Thursday, rejecting part of the planned arms deals.

The resolutions still have to be approved by the House of Representatives. Democrats are the majority in the opposition, which is why its adoption is considered a mere form.

However, Trump can override parliament’s decisions through a veto. A presidential veto can only be overridden by a two-thirds majority in both chambers, which is an extremely high hurdle.

The resolutions are in response to the fact that the Trump administration was bypassed in the rare step of having Congress approve the sale of arms, ammunition and aircraft maintenance services to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo justified the action by saying that the supplies were due to the activities of Nemesis Saudi Arabia and urgently needed by Iran. The Senate has now made it clear through its decisions that it does not want to accept the bypassing of Congress.

The resolutions also reflect the resistance of some Republican members of the House against the Trump administration’s side by side with Riyadh. In March and April, both houses of Congress asked the president to halt the military side of US involvement on Saudi Arabia’s side in the Yemen conflict. Trump then appealed the decision of Congress and vetoed it. Meanwhile, the conflict with Iran threatens to escalate – Tehran has now accused the US government of downing the drone even a lie.
