Walkers in winter? Why haven’t we seen snow on ‘The Walking Dead’ yet?

The Walking Dead, Season 7Image used with permission of the copyright holder Through the Seven Seasons The walking dead (and its three spinoffs, Fear the living dead), we’ve seen apocalypse survivors battling every type of walker you can imagine—from those burned to the bone, to bloated walkers and amputees. But we’ve never seen what happens to the walker when it’s frozen.

During a question-and-answer session at Walker Stalker Con 2018, creator/producer Robert Kirkman addressed a burning (um, cold?) question that keeps coming up season after season: Why haven’t we seen winter on the show yet? As expected, it would be difficult to create a winter wonderland during filming, which takes place in Atlanta during the warmest months of the year. According to Kirkman, “…it’s impractical to cover Georgia with snow in the summer, you don’t really have the budget for it.”

In addition, it presents new challenges for the survivors. How to take shelter outdoors and struggle to walk in the cold? Not to mention the serious wardrobe updates that would be required; there’s no way Daryl (Norman Reedus) will survive the cold winter in just that leather jacket, nor Michonne (Danai Gurira) in her signature T-shirt.

Wintertime has been shown several times in the comics, on which the AMC series is based, with the main group now supposed to be in Virginia. But in the series, time seems to jump through winter.

Scott M. Gimple, former showrunner (will now serve as chief content officer for Fear the living dead) said in a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly that they struggled with the decision to leave the cold and fluffy white stuff out of the show until now. But don’t rule it out completely for the future.

“If we can CGI a tiger,” Kirkman said in a 2016 ComicBook.com interview, “we can CGI some snow!”

Although we haven’t had a chance to see it yet, what about a walker in sub-zero temperatures? Kirkman says the walkers would essentially go into a state of mini-hibernation and simply freeze in place until they “thaw” and then go on their merry way, hunting for human flesh.

The eighth season of the series The walking dead debuts on Sunday, February 25. The series has also already been renewed for a ninth season, with longtime writer Angela Kang taking over as host.

As we gear up for new seasons, as long as Rick and company are still living in Virginia, the show will have some serious ‘splaining’ – or more time jumps – to explain the absence of those cold winter months and frozen walkers.
