Footage from the field shows two masked men scooping up donuts and staggering across the field as a series of banners are thrown from windows.

The hearse driver is then seen getting out of the vehicle and getting into a silver Subaru, before the couple drive away from the scene with signs scattered around the grounds.

The hearse was left in the center of the field, and the referee had to stop the game at half-time with the score 1-1.

A statement from Dunston UTC said: “We are all deeply saddened by the events that took place last night. Fortunately, no one was physically injured.”

“The club would like to confirm that the person named in the leaflets distributed during the pitch invasion has not had any association with Dunston UTS FC, in an official capacity, for over two years.

“The other person has nothing to do with our club.”

The press release added that the club has launched an investigation into the incident.

In a short tweet, National League side Gateshead said: “Due to an incident on the pitch shortly after half time, tonight’s game has been abandoned by the referee.”

Northern Premier League side Dunston added: “Tonight’s game has been abandoned due to a half-time incident.”

A fan in attendance described the stunt as a “scary experience” adding that there were “a lot of kids” at the time.

Dunston hosted National League South club Dartford in a friendly last weekend.

Police investigate the protest.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “

Just before 8.20pm today (Friday), two cars were reported to have entered the field during half time of the Dunston UTC v Gateshead match at the Dunston Football Club on Wellington Road.

After that, both cars, the Subaru and the hearse, continued to drive in circles, and a group of men wearing ski masks entered the field.

They then proceeded to drop a series of leaflets on the field, before driving away from the area in a Subaru before the police arrived. The hearse was left abandoned in the field.

“An investigation was immediately launched, and several inquiries are underway to establish all of the circumstances surrounding the report and to locate those involved.”

The men are believed to have known each other, and the police statement added that “strict action will be taken against anyone found to be involved.”
