Watch out — Diablo IV might break your Nvidia GPU

After last weekend Diablo IV open beta, reports have been pouring in that the game may be crashing Nvidia graphics cards. This means various crashes and subpar performance, as well as completely dead GPUs.

Fortunately, not all cards are affected and there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Here’s what we know.

After a long wait, many players rushed to play Diablo IV during the open beta weekend. The anticipated entry in one of Blizzard’s most successful franchises isn’t one of the most demanding games this year, so most modern gaming platforms should be able to handle it just fine — and they did. Most PCs came out unscathed, but some users were in for a very unpleasant surprise when their GPUs stopped working.

So far, all reports point to a problem with one specific type of card — Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti, made by Gigabyte. Third-party cards seem to be safe, but it never hurts to take extra precautions until Blizzard or Nvidia fix the problem.

Those who encountered problems rushed to the Reddit and Blizzard forums to report the issue. Some players experienced crashes, including monitors turning off on their own and players having to restart the entire computer. For others, like mkp0203 on Reddit, their graphics card died completely.

“While playing devil about 20 minutes in, during the cutscene in the chapel, my monitors turned off. I had to restart the computer and the motherboard is now posting error code 97. Nothing works. My GPU is dead,” said a Reddit user.

The problem is not that serious for everyone and it is difficult to estimate how many users are affected by this. Amazon’s New world it initially suffered from a similar problem and also tricked some of the top GPUs, including the RTX 3090 Ti.

In any case, if you want to be extra safe, you probably don’t need to avoid the game entirely. One way to prevent this problem is to limit the maximum number of frames per second (fps) on your GPU, not just the game. It is also recommended not to overclock the card while gaming Diablo IVbecause it puts additional strain on the GPU.

If you want to limit the frames per second for now, you’ll need to open the Nvidia Control Panel, right-click on the desktop to launch it, and then scroll down to Manage 3D settings. See for yourself inside Max. number of frames per second is enabled and set it to the same fps as your monitor’s refresh rate. Even if you’ve done this before, you may need to do it again after updating your drivers, as these settings can sometimes be reset during that time.

If you notice a drop in performance while gaming, it’s probably best to quit the game rather than stressing the GPU. It’s unclear if Gigabyte will replace broken RTX 3080 Ti GPUs for free, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. We’ll have to hear from Blizzard, Gigabyte, or Nvidia to find out what’s really going on, and we’ll update this article when we do.
