In July 2022, allegations surfaced of severe animal neglect at the Twist of Fate Sanctuary, operated by Ashley DiFelice in Salem County. Other sanctuary owners who heard rumors of neglect confronted DiFelice and visited the now-closed sanctuary on July 24, where they discovered the remains of dead and emaciated animals without access to clean drinking water. Photos of neglected animals and the remains of dead animals were shared in the Change petition. DiFelice was subsequently charged with animal cruelty and pleaded not guilty. The change request states that she is still awaiting trial and sentencing.

What happened to the animals at the Twist of Fate Reserve?

On April 12, 2023, The Dodo released a statement in response to the Twist of Fate revelations. The animal welfare organization expressed shock and sadness at the allegations against the sanctuary and announced that it had removed all videos featuring them. Dodo also contacted his partners at Scholastic and they mutually agreed to stop selling the book about Pumpkin, a minipony who died while in Twist of Fate’s care.
