What is Nvidia Reflex and how do you enable it in 2023?

In competitive games, the first person to pull the trigger sometimes wins. But sometimes it’s the person whose computer responds the fastest. Knowing what kind of input lag you’re dealing with is the first step in eliminating it, and Nvidia Reflex is a great tool for the job. In some games, it can go beyond measuring latency — it can help reduce it.

Once you have a high-performance gaming CPU and a powerful graphics card, the best way to make your computer more suitable for competitive gaming is to reduce a few milliseconds of input lag. Here’s how to use Nvidia Reflex to do just that.

It can even give you a competitive advantage.

What is Nvidia Reflex?

Nvidia Reflex is a bundle of GPU, G-Sync display and software technologies that help measure and reduce system latency. By doing so, it allows the computer and screen to respond more quickly to mouse and keyboard inputs, essentially allowing you to target and kill enemies faster and with greater precision.

Just like Depp Learning Super Sampling, Reflex Low Latency mode is a proprietary technology that requires an Nvidia graphics card. Although the latest GPU like one of the RTX 30 series provides the best experience, Reflex can work with any model, including GTX 900 and above. It works by optimizing the GPU and the game to give you the best performance with low latency.

Certain games also offer a Reflex+Boost setting, which boosts the clock speed of your GPU, especially if you’re playing CPU-heavy games, preventing potential bottlenecks.

How does Reflex work?

Reflex can help reduce render lag by as much as 80% and works best with first-person shooters such as Apex Legends, Valorant, Call of Duty, Fortnite, and others. It’s not designed to affect system performance, but there have been cases where it has a slight impact on average frame rate. The improved responsiveness that comes from reduced input lag, however, should be worth it – especially if you play competitively.

To optimize and reduce your system’s latency, Reflex uses a combination of SDKs and driver optimizations to effectively remove any bottlenecks between the CPU and GPU. This allows the GPU to render each frame as soon as the CPU passes it, without waiting behind existing render jobs. The end result can be a dramatic reduction in latency. Depending on the type of hardware and peripherals you have, you can reduce system latency by tens of milliseconds. This can have a real, tangible effect on your gaming performance.

It is also possible for game developers to improve the game’s latency performance with additional optimizations.

There are two basic components of Reflex. The first is the Reflex SDK, a set of APIs aimed at game developers to reduce and measure rendering latency. Using the SDK, developers can integrate Reflex directly with their games. This enables latency reduction above and beyond existing driver-only techniques such as Nvidia’s Ultra Low Latency Mode.

The second is the Reflex Latency Analyzer, which, as the name suggests, is a system latency measurement tool. It is currently available on 360Hz G-Sync Esports displays from Acer, Alienware, Asus and MSI, as well as esports peripherals from Asus, Logitech, Razer and SteelSeries. This technology can detect clicks coming from your mouse and then measure the time it takes for the resulting pixels to change on the screen.

How to enable Nvidia Reflex

Nvidia Reflex can be enabled in individual games by going to your game’s graphics settings. Every game is different, so you may have to look for it, but it should usually be in the game’s options or settings menu.

Here’s an example Apex Legends:

Then choose Video top and bottom settings advanced, you should see an option to enable Nvidia Reflex.

Some games also have a separate option called Nvidia Reflex+Boost. Enabling it can improve GPU performance to further reduce latency.

Which games support Nvidia Reflex?

There are over 70 games listed as supporting Nvidia Reflex in some form. Some can only give you latency statistics, others offer support for an auto-configured Reflex analyzer, and still others support Reflex Low Latency. Some stand out include Apex Legends, Battlefield 2042, Valorant, Hogwarts Legacy, and upcoming ones Counter-Strike 2 Update.

More games are being added all the time, so keep an eye on the full list on Nvidia’s website for the latest releases.
