What power supply do you need for the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080?

Although the RTX 4090 was rumored to consume an incredible amount of power, it’s actually not that bad (read our RTX 4090 review for more details). Rated at 450W, the 4090 is equal to the RTX 3090 Ti in power consumption. However, you may still need a new power supply.

The RTX 4090 is rated at just 450 W, but the associated models on the boards can put out much more (an overclocked MSI RTX 4090 Suprim X maxed out at over 500 W in our tests). We’re here to walk you through the power supplies you need to consider if you want an RTX 4090 or an RTX 4080.

Before we get into that, note the 16-pin power connector on RTX 40 GPUs. Most power supplies don’t come with this connector, so you’ll need to use the adapter that came in the box with your card. graph.

What power supply do you need for RTX 4090?

GX-850 season.Seasonal

Nvidia recommends an 850W PSU for its Founder’s Edition (FE) 4090, and many other third-party models recommend the same amount of power for GPUs that have the same clock speed as the FE model. Seasonic’s GX-850 is a very good choice here, as it’s completely modular, has an 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating, and comes with plenty of extras like velcro straps, cable ties, and a PSU tester.

At the time of writing, it retails for around $160, which is a bit pricey. But Seasonic has a great reputation for quality power supplies, and you don’t want to pair the 4090 with something that’s likely to go bad.

EVGA 1000 P5.EVGA

Some RTX 4090 models require more power if they have higher clocks than the Founder’s Edition. The EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P5 1000W Power Supply is very similar to the Seasonic GX-850 in terms of accessories, but packs an additional 150W and has an 80 Plus Platinum efficiency rating. It’s not much more expensive than the GX-850, either; At the time of writing, it costs between $170 and $195, depending on where you buy it.

For those of you looking to pair a premium RTX 4090 with a higher-end CPU like the Ryzen 9 7950X or Core i9-13900K, you’d be wise to go with something like Corsair’s HX1200, which is an 80 Plus Platinum-rated 1200W. power supply It is fully modular, has similar accessories to the lower wattage Seasonic and EVGA power supplies, and can be found for around $230-$250. There are power supplies that can provide even more power in watts, but 1200 watts are enough for even today’s most powerful computers.

What power supply do you need for RTX 4080?

Before we dive into the power recommendations, we should mention that the RTX 4080 16GB and RTX 4080 12GB are, despite their names, very different GPUs. A 12 GB card not only comes with less memory, but also with far fewer cores and consequently less power. The recommendations below are for the 16GB model, so they will work for the 12GB model, but they may be a bit over the top.

GX-750 season.Seasonal

We start with another Seasonic PSU, this time the 750W GX-750, which meets the 750W requirements for the 16GB RTX 4080. It’s basically the same as the GX-850, but with 100W less power. There is a cheaper semi-modular version of this power supply, but if you’re shopping for a 4080, you probably won’t mind saving a few bucks on cable management expertise.

RM850x Corsair.Privateer

If you need a higher wattage power supply for a 3rd party 4080, you can check out our recommended 4090 power supplies, as there is nothing special about needing more power, but we can provide you with some alternative options as well. The Corsair RM850x is an 850W PSU from Corsair and has an 80 Plus Gold rating. It is also completely modular.

EVGA 1000 GT.EVGA

If your PC is going to be using a high powered 16GB 4080 and high end CPU, you will need a 1000W power supply. EVGA’s SuperNOVA 1000 GT offers 1000 Watts just like the SuperNOVA 1000 P5 which we recommend for the 4090, but it is rated Gold, not Platinum. Still, the drop in efficiency shouldn’t be much of a problem; efficiency is higher with lower power consumption, and the 4080 consumes much less power than the 4090.

Don’t skimp on your PSU this generation

The power requirements we’re seeing for the 40 series aren’t exactly new, but they’re definitely higher than normal; The RTX 3090 had 350 watts and now the 4090 has 450 watts, the same as the 3090 Ti. You’ll definitely want a good PSU with plenty of power if you want Nvidia’s new flagship.

As for the 4080, the 12GB and 16GB models don’t have crazy power draws of 285 and 320 watts, respectively. However, these cards are not yet available. Although Nvidia has shared its power consumption, third-party cards may require more power.
