The Alola region was first introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. These games gave us new Pokémon, as well as reinterpretations of the Pokémon we know and love. Of course, there are some Pokémon that are clearly better than others, but there are also some Pokémon that no trainer would want to miss out on. While these Pokemon aren’t necessarily the hardest to catch, they can be hard to track.
Fortunately, we have compiled a list of the 10 hardest Pokémon to find. We hope this makes your training a little easier. Instead of blindly searching for these elusive Pokémon, we have the location of each one and the best tactics to find them.

Munchlax and Happy: Route 1
Munchlax, the child form of the dreaded Snorlax, can be caught very early in the game. Munchlax can be found in patches of grass to the right of his house on Melemele Island. It’s an extremely rare encounter, but it’s there.
An unevolved form of Chansey, Happyiny can also be caught on Route 1, but only during SOS battles (battles where Pokémon called for help). It is rumored that the wild Bonsly is most likely calling Happyiny for help.
Bagon: highway 3
The dragon Pokémon that eventually becomes the fearsome Salamance can be found more easily later in the game, but you can find it very early on on Melemele Island (the first island). There’s a patch of grass on Route 3 to the right of the bridge that leads back to Route 1. The encounter rate is incredibly low, but if you’re determined to have Salamancers on your team from the start, is possible.
Passimian/Oranguru: Lush Jungle
A new twin (brotherly, not identical) monkey Pokémon can be found early on, on another island in Lush Jungle. Passimian appears only on the Sun and Oranguru on the Moon. Both are extremely rare encounters in their respective games. All you can do is keep hunting.
Febas: Brooklet Hill
When introduced in Generation 3 (Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire), Feebas was incredibly difficult to catch. Now it’s just a matter of beating the odds while fishing Brooklet Hill. Look for bubble fishing spots to improve your chances of finding some rare fish that turns into a beautiful Milotic.
Vulpix/Sandshrew: Tapu Village
Vulpix (in Pokémon Sun) and Sandshrew (in Pokémon Moon) have been in Pokémon forever. But in Alola they get a new writing and they look great. They are common on the way to the Elite Four, but you can actually get them much sooner than that. With a little patience, you can find them in the grass in Tapu Village on the third island.
Mimikyu: Thrifty Megamart
If you’re far enough into the story to capture Mimikya, then you’ll already know exactly where to get her. But an encounter with the mighty Pikachu that might get so weird in an abandoned supermarket you might wonder if she even exists. Rest assured it is – keep knocking those Golbats and Haunters unconscious until your new best friend shows up.
Jangmo-o: Grand Pony Canyon
Jangmo-o lives in a canyon on Poni Island and is your combat opponent when you get there. But just like the other monsters on this list, this Dragon-type Pokemon isn’t easy to find. You’ll have to search the grass around the test site or even crawl under nearby branches to find its hiding place.
Aerodactyl: Sailors’ Village
Call it a weird flaw, but in Pokemon Sun and Moon, Pokemon can’t hide because all the different creatures willingly expose themselves. Take only the case of Aerodactyl, which was exposed by the inhabitants of Seafolk Village. Once you find the trainer on the Huntail ship, he will give you the Aerodactyl for free, no strings attached. It is definitely worth the trip to catch this Pokemon.
Dhelmise: seaside town
It’s safe to say that Dhelmise is the strangest Pokémon fish you’ll come across while hunting. Strangely, it’s not actually a fish and has a ghost/grass type instead of a water type. Regardless of all that, you can only catch Spooky Anchor when you fish in Seafolk Village. Try to cast the line in places with bubbles, as this means there is something below the surface; however, the bubbles do not guarantee that you will find Dhelmise due to the low encounter rate.
Drampa and Turtonator: Mount Lanakila/Blush Mountain
After catching the Legendary Pokemon, make sure to catch Dramp and Turtonator. These two Pokemon are Sun/Moon exclusives that you won’t want to miss out on. Drampa, an exclusive type of Moon and dragon/normal, can be found on Mount Lanakila; Turtonator, exclusive to Sun and a Dragon/Fire type, is found in Blush Mountain.
