oIn 2014, Marvel published Guardians of the Galaxy, a superhero film about a ragtag group of misfits who are forced to band together and escape after stealing a mysterious orb containing the Power Stone. Even without the legacy Marvel characters (Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, etc.), Guardians of the Galaxy became a surprise hit, and the team quickly became one of the most popular entities in the MCU.

It will be the last iteration of this Guardians lineup due to several actors, like Bautista and Saldaña, leaving Marvel entirely. However, this does not guarantee that their characters will die in the film, or that the Guardians will disappear from the MCU entirely. Gunn also leaves Marvel to become co-CEO of DC Studios.

The official logline reads: “At Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved group of misfits looks a little different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe and protect one of his own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could very well lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
