Who dies at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

It’s the end of an era. Almost ten years ago, Guardians of the Galaxy changed the MCU forever and introduced the world to a group of jerks who, over the course of a few movies, grew into a family. Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Mantis and Nebula became sentimental favorites of MCU fans and helped usher in the cosmic side of Marvel that is the dominant playground for Phase 5.

However, when things come to an end, it usually means someone bites the big deal. And certainly, in the press and announcements for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there is a strong indication that death will visit one or more of our beloved Guardians. Zoe Saldana has been open about being done with the role of Gamora, one of the MCU’s best female characters, after this film; likewise Dave Bautista with Drax. And one of the key promotional images for the film shows Nebula carrying the limp body of Star-Lord. Did I also mention that one of the key plot points involves a mortally wounded Rocket?

It’s a good bet that someone will die in Guardians of the Galaxy, but who? And how? Digital Trends has all the answers for you below.

Who dies at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

Well, the answer is a bit complex. Technically, a lot of people die, since the entire planet, Counter-Earth, is blown up by the High Evolutionary. As for our guards, some members are very close to saying “sayonara!” in life. A rocket hovers near death through much of the image, and at one point, straight lines. However, he does not die by sheer force of will. As he floats in limbo and walks towards the afterlife, a friend from his past tells him that his time has not yet come. She pushes him away, and Rocket rejoins the land of the living.

Peter Quill also has a moment where it looks like he’s going to die. As everyone tries to evacuate the High Evolutionary’s exploding ship and jump to Knowhere, Star-Lord tries to bring in as many aliens and animals as possible before the ship explodes. He jumps off the ship using his rocket pack, but the distance is too great and he begins to freeze in the cold embrace of space. Groot tries to help by extending his wooden limbs, but they freeze before he can reach Star-Lord. This appears to be the end of Christ Pratt’s Marvel career.

Except, of course, it isn’t; Pratt is too big a star thanks Movie Super Mario Bros, and he likes the role too damn much. Adam Warlock, a cosmic being who can fly freely through space, swoops in and rescues Peter, taking him to Knowhere where he quickly recovers.

So who dies Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 then? Well, Ayesha bites it, but she’s a relatively minor character. As for the main characters, only the High Evolutionary seems to die, and even that is debatable. He is thoroughly destroyed by each guardian, but Rocket, in a great sign of growth, does not deliver the killing blow.

He is not the violent animal he used to be; he learned that blind hatred and death are simply not the answer. He leaves the High Evolutionary to die on the ship and we see the ship explode. However, we never actually see the villain die on the ship. I know, it might seem like I’m nitpicking, but as any comic book fan knows, if you can’t see a body, then no one really died.

You can argue against the Guardians as the team dies at the end of Vol. 3

Although it seems that no guardians died, only the villain died at the end Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, you could argue that the Guardians as a team die at the end of the movie. After Peter is rescued and the High Evolutionary is dispatched, Knowhere passes for some time as the people mend their wounds. Gamora has already left, telling her former teammates that life is now with the Ravagers.

At the moment when the original Guardians of the Galaxy team disbands. Star-Lord tells his friends that he wants to return to Earth and find his still-living grandfather and resume the childhood he never had. Mantis talks about her desire to discover who she is and leaves with three High Evolutionary animals as her companions. Drax and Nebula want to stay in Knowhere and take care of the new residents from the High Evolutionary’s lab. Only Rocket and Groot remain, and two people do not make a team. The original Guardians are thus disbanded, and with that, an era truly ends in the MCU.
