Google is celebrating the 69th birthday of Barbara May Cameron with a special doodle. Cameron, who was born on May 22, 1954, was a Native American photographer, poet, writer, and human rights activist remembered for her passionate writing and speeches. Who is Barbara May Cameron?

Barbara May Cameron was born on May 22, 1954 and is a member of the Hunkpapa Lakota tribe from the Fort Yates Band of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Her Lakota name is Wia Washte Wi, meaning ‘good woman’ or ‘woman’. After finishing elementary and high school, she pursued photography and videography at the American Institute of Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Cameron, a trailblazing advocate for the intersection of LGBTQIA+ inclusion and Native American community, has been actively involved in various programs over the years to improve human happiness. Her work in social justice began with addressing racism in the gay space and advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights in her community after coming out as a lesbian. She then became the Executive Director of Community Solidarity Against Violence, where she helped victims of hate crimes and domestic violence.

Cameron’s dedication to improving human rights led to many notable achievements throughout her career. In 1988, the mayor of San Francisco appointed Cameron to both Citizens’ Community Development Commission and the San Francisco Human Rights Commission. The next mayor appointed her to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Barbara was also an advisor to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control, assisting with immunization program against AIDS and children.

Cameron co-founded Gay American Indians, which was considered America’s first gay American Indian liberation organization. She also chaired Lesbian Freedom Day Parade and Celebration for five years from 1980 to 1985. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Barbara received several awards such as Harvey Milk Award for Community Service in 1992, Community Service Award for Women in the Cause of Bay Area (the first recipient) among others.

In addition to these accomplishments, Cameron partnered with the International Indigenous AIDS Network in 1993 to educate people about AIDS across different Indian reservations within America. She is also the founder of Native American Institute for Health and Wellness whose mission is primarily focused on empowering Native American women by publishing works written by them.

Death

Cameron had been in a relationship with Linda Boyd for 21 years, during which they raised their son, Rhys Boyd-Farrell. Unfortunately, on February 12, 2002, Linda passed away from natural causes at the age of 47. At the time of her passing, her script entitled “Long Time, No See” was left unfinished.
