Cary Grant, full name Archibald Alec Leach, was born on January 18, 1904 in Horfield, Bristol, England, to Elias James Leach and Elsie Maria Leach. His father worked in a clothing factory ironing clothes, and his mother made a living by sewing. He had an older brother, but he died of tuberculous meningitis less than a year after his birth.
His father was an alcoholic and his mother suffered from clinical depression, so he had a difficult childhood. His father sent his mother to Glenside Hospital, a mental institution when he was nine years old. He later informed him of his mother’s death. Grant and his father moved into Grant’s grandmother’s house in Bristol.
