Rebecca Lobo was born in Hartford, Connecticut on October 6, 1973 to Ruth Ann and Dennis Joseph Lobo. He has two siblings, Jason and Rachel, both of whom played college basketball. She grew up in Southwick, where her parents were professional teachers. Lobo’s father also coached track and field as well as basketball.
Lobo showed an early interest in basketball, even writing a letter to Arnold Auerbach, then president of the Bolton Celtics, stating that she would be the first girl on his team. She wrote this letter to him when she was still in the third grade. Lobo was a starter on the boys’ team in his community before the girls’ team was formed. She later attended Southwick-Tolland Regional High School, where she played on the school’s soccer team. Back in high school, she set a record of 2740 points.

Career
Rebecca started playing basketball as a child when she joined the community boys team and was selected as a starter. She went to Southwick Tolland Regional High School, where she set the state scoring record with 2,740 points. She attended the University of Connecticut after graduating high school because of its academic excellence.
She played for the varsity team The Huskies, which she led to the 1995 state championship. The team finished with a perfect 35-0 record. Her collegiate career was so successful that in 1995 she was named the national player of the year. Lobo won the Wade Trophy, Honda Sports Award, AP Player of the Year and USBWA Player of the Year. She was the first player in history to be named an All-American in both the academy and basketball.
She was selected to play for the U.S. Under-18 National Team in 1992 and later competed in Mexico that year. She also competed with the team in Brazil, where they both won a silver medal. Lobo joined the national team in 1995 and competed in the 1996 Olympics, where the team won a gold medal.
The Women’s National Basketball Association was founded in 1997, and was awarded to the New York Liberty during the league’s inaugural draft. She suffered an injury in 1999, which prevented her from playing on the WNBA All-Star team. Lobo and her mother published The Home Team, a book about her mother’s battle with breast cancer, in 1996.
She joined the Houston Comets in 2002 for one season before being traded to the Connecticut Sun. After retiring from the National Women’s Basketball League in 2003, she became a basketball analyst and sports reporter for ESPN.
