Why is my Alexa Echo green?

Amazon’s Echo line of smart speakers and displays are great for just about everything. Whether you use these devices to manage your daily schedule, control smart home equipment, or stream your favorite music, Echo products are easy to set up and offer a wealth of user-friendly features. They also display multi-colored lights that are meant to notify you of something.

Like a coded system of symbols, the different colors your Echo lights up mean something different about the device itself: an upcoming order from Amazon, your Internet connection, or the topic of today’s explanation — an incoming call.

What does a green light mean?

Whether you’re using an Echo speaker with an LED light ring at the top or bottom of the device, or an Echo Show smart display with a light bar at the bottom of the touchscreen, a green light on your Echo hardware means you have an incoming call.

The call can be from an actual phone or through a Drop In session initiated by a friend or family member using another Echo device or the Alexa app.

After you actively answer the specified phone call or choose to start a standard call or your own session, the indicator light should start spins green (on the Echo speaker).

How to turn off the green light of your Alexa

There are several ways to make your Echo device’s green light disappear temporarily or permanently. We have described both methods below.

Step 1: When the indicator light is flashing green, all you have to do is say “Alexa, answer the call” and your smart device will start the call or Drop In session. At this point, that same green light should start spinning, meaning you’ll be able to start talking to the person on the other end of the call.

You can also tell Alexa to ignore the call, which will make the flashing green light disappear.

Step 2: When you’re done with the call, just say “Alexa, hang up” and the rotating green light will disappear.

Step 3: If you never want to see that green light again — flashing or spinning — you’ll need to go to Communication your Alexa app settings and disable a few things.

Step 4: Launch the app, select Devicesthen select Echo & Alexa.

Step 5: Find the Alexa device you want to control, then select it Communications and turn it off.

You will now be unable to receive standard calls and messages from non-Alexa mobile devices.

Step 6: If you don’t want your Alexa device to be able to receive any incoming calls, turn off Stop by in the same settings panel.

What do some other lights mean?

While we’ve talked about the meaning of your Echo device’s many different lights before, a quick refresher never hurts. Here’s what some other bright colors mean and how to make each one disappear.

Step 1: A pulsating yellow light means Alexa has a notification. The alert could be about an Amazon package that’s on its way, a reminder to restock a frequently purchased item from your Amazon shopping list, or that you have an unread message (or two) in your Alexa inbox.

To make the yellow light disappear, simply say “Alexa, what are my notifications?” After it tells you what they are, just say “Alexa, clear notifications” and the yellow light will disappear.

Step 2: If your Alexa device is flashing red, it means your product’s far-field microphones are turned off.

Whether you intended to turn them off or not, all you have to do to make the red light disappear is turn on the microphones by pressing the microphone button on your Echo speaker or display.

Step 3: If your Alexa device is white, it means one of two things.

Whether you’re adjusting the volume with voice commands, the device’s buttons, or through the Alexa app, volume adjustments will always be indicated by the gradual increase or decrease of your device’s white light.

If Alexa shows a spinning white light, it means Alexa Guard is turned on and set to Operating mode Away. You can disable this by telling Alexa you’ve arrived home or turn off Guard via the Alexa app.
