The HBO team is also trying as some users have also reported about the HBO Max app freezing issue on their Apple TV. At first glance, this appears to be more of an issue on HBO’s part. But Roku’s old hardware device can’t be ruled out as one of the culprits.

I was able to get the HBO Max app to work on the Roku. I downloaded the regular HBO Max app on my phone, logged in with my information, and the system worked on the app. Then I went back to Roku and opened the HBO Max app and it worked. I don’t know if it’s a sync issue between real HBO Max account and Roku working, but I hope others will give it a try.
HBO has also suggested its users to update with the latest version of the HBO Max app. This can be checked using the * button on the channel tile or by going to Settings > System > System update > for System update. An update to the HBO Max app was released on December 22. If this option doesn’t work, remove HBO Max, power off Roku completely for at least 5 full minutes before restarting and installing the app.
