Why RIP Shredder is trending on X (formerly Twitter) Hint: It has nothing to do with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

X users were very confused on Thursday when they saw a trend called “Rip Shredder” which for people of a certain generation meant the arch nemesis of Sensei Splinter and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, the reality was a little different and the X trend had nothing to do with the TMNT character.

The trend seems to have been to sympathize with the loss of Shredder, the canine best friend of podcaster and Youtuber Ethan Klein. For the uninitiated, Ethan Klein runs h3h3Products, a YouTube channel run by him and his wife, Hila Klein, that mostly consists of reaction videos and sketch comedy. Klein shared a heartbreaking post on Instagram about losing his best friend that went viral on Xu.

He wrote on Instagram: “Today I lost my best friend Shredder. I am in immense pain, but I am also grateful for the time we shared. Shredder was the physical embodiment of my and Hila’s love, it is no exaggeration to say that he was our first child. He changed me, made me softer, more loving, more empathetic. I knew true companionship and unconditional love. He died young, almost 6 years old, from kidney failure. It seems bitterly unfair, but I know that people always lose their loved ones early, so I do my best to remain grateful for the beautiful life and times we had. He was a fierce protector, often lashing out even at my own family if they reached out to me too quickly (obviously a behavior problem, but it was in his nature to love and protect us.”

He added: “He was also too small to hurt anyone so it was more endearing than problematic.) He would bark at passing delivery trucks, convinced that he was the only one who scared them off (at 10 pounds). 6 months ago, he first fell ill with stage 4 kidney disease and fought with all his love to survive. When he first came home, we thought he might make a full recovery. But soon blood tests showed that his kidney had not recovered and that the disease would eventually take him. It was a desperately difficult 6 months as I wondered when the unthinkable would happen. Hoping and dreaming, against my better judgement, that he would magically recover or stabilize for a significantly longer period of time. Unfortunately, that did not happen. But what happened is we had a wonderful 6 months filled with love, most of the time he was amazing. All this rambling to say this: I love you forever Shredder, our perfect pretty boy.”

Several users expressed their grief over Shredder’s death X. X wrote: “The pain is so devastating, I feel for Ethan. I scream. RIP Shredder.”

Another wrote: “Hold your fur babies tight to family tonight.”

A third wrote: “Why am I actually crying. Losing a pet is so hard and I just feel for people who go through so much. RIP Shredder.”

A fourth user wrote: “I don’t think people realize how hard it is to lose a pet. Shredder was their first baby and anyone who watched the podcast for 5 minutes could see how much they adored him. My heart goes out to Ethan and Hila tonight.”
