On Sunday, March 12, at 2:00 am (local time), most people in the United States will “leap forward” and put their watches forward one hour. In addition to losing an hour of sleep, an important question arises: will your phone automatically switch to daylight saving time?
That’s a question that applies regardless of what phone you have. Whether you are using an iPhone 14 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or any other smartphone, it is important to know whether or not you need to change it for the new time.

In the past, when we didn’t have smart devices to do the work for us, we had to remember to change the clocks ourselves, or find out the hard way. Of course, with non-Internet wall clocks, oven clocks, and some car clocks, you’ll still have to do that work.

While the steps above should be all you need to worry about, there are a few other things you can do to stay extra make sure your phone changes when needed for daylight saving time.
If you haven’t updated your phone in a while, it’s worth checking that you’re running the latest software available. On the iPhone, open settings app, touch In generaland then Software update. If you have an Android phone, go to settings app, scroll down the page and touch Software update either Upgrade system (The text will be slightly different depending on which Android phone you have.)
Outdated software shouldn’t affect your phone’s automatic daylight saving time, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to install an update if it’s available.
If you have alarms set on your phone, they will also automatically update to the new daylight saving time without any extra work.
