Woman Telling Twin Sister Her Name for Baby Daughter Is ‘Stupid’ Cheered

A woman has been widely praised online for labeling her twin sister’s decision to name her child after a Japanese cartoon character as “stupid”.

Naming a child is an important decision for any parent, so people might ask family and friends what they think, but as one couple discovered, the choice may not be to everyone’s liking.

In a viral post shared on Reddit’s Am I The ****** page, user Far-Competition2975 explained that her twin sister, Maise, 24, is pregnant with their first child and the boy is due in February.

Maise said she and her husband, 26, had been arguing about baby names and settled on one, which was a somewhat unorthodox choice.

The couple decided on the name Luffy, the name of the main character in the long-running One Piece manga, anime and recent Netflix series of the same name.

A Reddit user said: “She asked for my honest opinion and I told her the name was ridiculous and her husband was right. I tried to say it gently but really how gently can you tell someone their idea is stupid?”

“I suggested she go back to the drawing board on that one and maybe look at lesser known anime character names if she wanted to.”

She continued: “Maisie got upset and said the name was cute and we were both just closed. I told her she asked for my honest opinion and she got it.

“She kept trying to convince me it was a good name and the conversation got hysterical and I told her it was a stupid name, end of discussion. She started crying and left and has been looking at me coldly ever since.

“Our parents told me to just tell Maisie I’m sorry because my words really upset her and I should have been more gentle.”

British baby name expert SJ Strum said Newsweek that a compromise could be found in the specific case.

“We have to remember that names are so sensitive because it’s really the first big parenting decision you make – so even gently saying it’s stupid, it’s literally on the phone, criticizing her as a mum and there’s been an emotional outburst from” , she said.

“However, she needs to listen to her sister and husband and consider that their reaction will be that of many people. The best approach is to pick a name and then use Luffy as a nickname that will hopefully wear off before school.

“I would suggest Alfie or Lucas and keep the anime theme as a gentle family name. That way everyone hears each other and is happy.”
