World Post Day 2023: World Post Day is celebrated worldwide on October 9. The day commemorates the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland. The UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969 declared it World Post Day. UPU focused on the global communication revolution, with the goal of people being able to write to others around the world. This day highlights the importance of postal services.
India Post has started observing National Postal Week from 9 October to 15 October 2020 to raise awareness about the role of the postal sector in the daily lives of people and businesses and its contribution to the socio-economic development of countries. The weekly schedule is as follows:

This year marks the 149th anniversary of the Post Office. World Post Day aims to create awareness of the role of the postal department in our daily lives, as well as its contribution to the social and economic development of the world.
World Post Day: History
It was during 255 BC when the first known postal document was found in Egypt. During the 17th and 18th centuries, bilateral postal agreements were used to manage the exchange of mail between countries. By the 19th century, the network of bilateral agreements had become so complex that it negatively affected the trade and commercial development of the countries. Now there is a need to simplify and streamline it internationally.
In 1840, in England, Sir Rowland Hill introduced a system whereby postage for letters had to be prepaid. Also, the same tariffs were charged for all letters of a certain weight range in the domestic service, regardless of the distance traveled. He also introduced the world’s first postage stamp.
During 1863, United States Postmaster General Montgomery Blair organized a conference in Paris. Delegates from 15 European and American countries collaborated and established numerous general principles for mutual agreements. The shortcoming of this meeting was that nothing was decided on an international postal agreement.
In Bern (1874), Heinrich Von Stephan, a senior postal official from the North German Confederation, formulated a plan for an international postal union. Based on his proposal, the Swiss government held an international conference in Bern on September 15, 1874, in which 22 countries participated with their representatives.
On October 9 of the same year, with the establishment of the General Postal Union, World Post Day began. In 1878, its name was changed to Universal Postal Union.
The Treaty of Bern signed in 1874 succeeded in simplifying international postal services and regulations into a single postal territory for transactions and the exchange of letters.
World Post Day: Celebrations
The celebration includes the participation of member countries in organizing some programs and activities to raise awareness of the important role of the post office at the national level. More than 150 countries celebrate World Post Day in different ways every year. In some countries, this day is celebrated as a working holiday. In some countries, new postal products and services are introduced on this day. Even some post offices conduct awards and recognition to their employees for excellent services.
Philatelic exhibitions are organized with the introduction of new stamps. Posters with a World Post Day theme are also displayed in post offices and other public areas. Conferences, seminars and workshops and cultural and recreational programs are held. Special souvenirs such as T-shirts and badges are issued at some post offices.
World Post Day: Logo
The World Post Day logo shows two components, graphics and text. The graphic shows two people exchanging an object, which could be a letter, package or any postal transaction. Individuals appear to be jumping borders, demonstrating the phenomenon that mail is not only exchanged within but also across borders. The blue color represents the sky, and the green represents the earth.
Therefore, World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 every year to raise awareness of the importance of post in everyday life. The whole world is committed to achieving the goals of sustainable development. Its goal is the fight against poverty, hunger, inequality and injustice and action against climate change. In fact, World Post Day plays an important role in providing infrastructure for development.
