If you’ve played any of the previous Xenoblade Chronicles games, then there will be a lot of familiar elements when you start playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3. How to increase colony affinity

We touched on this in the introduction, but all colonies must be freed from their commanders before you can start exploring them freely and earning the trust of the people. You’ll have to wait until you get to Chapter 3 before the option to free a colony opens up, but when it does, you should free every one you can as soon as possible. Once you’re freed, you’ll see that each colony has its own affinity rating from one to five stars, with five being full affinity.
While you might think that simply freeing the colony would greatly increase affinity, it doesn’t. To actually start increasing your fame around the colony, you have a few options. The easiest way is to simply explore the colony looking for NPCs that have a gold star icon above their head. All you have to do is talk to these specific people to raise your affinity rank a bit. You can also get a small boost by eating at their local canteen and ushering fallen soldiers into the afterlife with your flute. You can spot these trapped ghosts on the map via the pipe icon.
Another potentially quick source of affinity is Collectopedia cards. Each liberated colony will give you quests in your collectibles collection to collect certain materials in exchange for affinity, XP, and a reward the first time you complete it. You can complete them more than once, but you will no longer receive that reward. If you’ve been collecting a ton of stuff, you can easily gain affinity by submitting these requests.
For a more significant affinity boost, you should focus on completing the side quests you pick up from that colony. There’s only a certain amount of each, so you’ll still need to use some of the other methods to get the most out of the colony, but these quests should give you most of the affinity you need — and always be on the lookout for one quest that opens up another new one, too.
What do you gain by increasing colony affinity?

Besides the satisfaction of helping all the local people, you get some very valuable rewards if you work hard to maximize your affinity rank with each colony. Each star level you reach will reward you with a different passive status bonus, with seven possible options. This also means that the bonuses you get from different colonies will overlap a lot. While that might sound disappointing, these bonuses stack, so the more you get, the better your buffs get. You can check the level for each of these bonuses at Party skills Menu. Here are all the bonuses and what they do for you:
- Speed Jogger: Increases running speed
- Item Retriever: Increases item collection range
- Silent Steps: Reduces monster detection range
- Shiny-Hunter: Increases the chances of encountering rare monsters
- Slow Digestion: Extends the duration of the meal’s effect
- Swift Swimmer: Increases swimming speed
- Caravan Call: Causes Nopon Caravans to visit colonies
