Yamaha’s new compact soundbar is small enough to fit on your desk

Yamaha just announced its latest soundbar, the ultra-compact SR-C30A, which will retail for $280 when it becomes available to US customers in October 2022. The diminutive bar is only 23.6 inches wide, making it narrow enough to can be placed under most 27-inch computer monitors.

Although small, the SR-C30A should have no problem putting out room-filling sound. It boasts 90 watts of power, delivered via two 1.8-inch full-range soundbar drivers and the included small wireless subwoofer, which has a 5.1-inch driver.

The subwoofer is just as compact as the soundbar — it’s only 5.9 inches wide and can be placed on its side. Depending on how tall your sofa legs are, you may even be able to tuck the pad under the seat.

In terms of connectivity, you get HDMI ARC, a surprising two optical ports, an analogue stereo mini-in and Bluetooth for wireless audio streaming, with multipoint for connecting two devices simultaneously.

The soundbar has a collection of controls on the top panel, but there’s also an included remote, and you can use Yamaha’s Sound Bar Remote app for iOS or Android as a third control option.

Yamaha chose not to support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X on this model, but it does support Dolby Digital, and there’s a 3D Movie mode that Yamaha says can provide a 3D virtual surround sound experience. There’s also a dedicated game mode intended to improve your ability to hear key sounds in the game when you’re sitting close to the speakers, as well as standard and stereo modes.

Finally, the CR30 provides two additional features for enhanced TV and movie viewing: Clear Voice, which improves dialogue clarity, and Adaptive Bass, which Yamaha says will automatically equalize highs, mids, and lows at low volumes. The company claims this technique is “superior to so-called ‘night listening modes’ in other brands of soundbars that compress frequencies across the board.”

We hope to get our hands on a review unit in the near future so we can test these claims.
