You can use the power of ChatGPT in Google Slides now

OpenAI’s ChatGPT capability continues to expand beyond its initial interface, most recently through a new Google Workspace app called MagicSlides that has emerged as a companion for creating projects in Google Slides.

The app works as a Google Workspace add-on, which you can install and then access from the Extensions option within a Google Slides presentation. It also requires you to have an OpenAI account, as you will need to have an API key to track your usage. You can generate a key from your account in View API keys section.

The application has an interesting interface. It is displayed on the right side of the Google Slides presentation outline and includes input options such as topic and number of slides. For a final, optional option, you can include other things you want in your slides, such as a professional or funny tone.

Below that is a space to enter the API key, which should be done before attempting to generate the slides. Without an API key, you have a limited number of opportunities to generate content, about three. The content will also not automatically fill in the presentation, but will be visible in the Show activity section. We figured this out after a bit of troubleshooting and several failed attempts to enter the API key. If in doubt, refresh the page. Once everything was up and running, the presentation went out with a few hiccups, with a 45 second countdown for the generation.

You can always open the presentation and make changes. Some may be necessary as the content of the presentation may not populate well visually. Currently, the feature is only compatible with internal Google Slides themes. You can’t yet design unique themes or use third-party themes, although compatibility is expected soon.

The industry has already seen major partnerships, with companies like Microsoft investing in OpenAI, and ChatGPT being built into its Bing search engine. The brand is also expected to implement chatbot technology in Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word and PowerPoint. Namely, PowerPoint is a presentation program similar to Google Slides.

Google is also expected to introduce its proprietary Bard chatbot to its Google Chrome browser in the coming weeks. The company is sure to follow Bard with its own AI updates to Google Workspace apps, including Sheets, Slides, and Docs.

Google told the New York Times in January that it plans to announce more than 20 AI-powered projects during 2023. So far, the Bard chatbot is the only one that has been confirmed.
