This May, Hollywood kicked off the summer blockbuster season with the release of guardians of the galaxy vol. 3 and quick xwith Little Mermaid Just around the corner. Most audiences have returned to multiplexes to see how the final phase of the MCU plays out, or what’s next for Dom and his extended family in the never-ending a quick saga.
As impressive as May was, however, June’s movie slate promises to be bigger, better, and in some cases, louder. Lots of movies coming out next month, with the new Stephen King adaptation and another transformers A sequel is waiting in the wings, but the five movies below are the ones that stand out as not only worthy of attention, but can hopefully fill the need for a good summer movie.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (June 2)

How do you follow one of the most beloved films of the last five years? That is the challenge that awaits the creators Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Versethe first sequel to the 2018 Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Some, including James Gunn, called that first movie the best comic book movie ever made. Like all sequels, Via Spider-Verse it doubles down on what made the first movie such a hit: more charm, more kinetically animated fight sequences, and more multi-universe Spider-Men. Much more.
Via Spider-Verse sends Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen into a race against time to stop one of their variants, Spider-Man 2099, from doing anything bad. Along for the ride are heavily pregnant Spider-Woman and Spider-Punk, who, in this author’s opinion, is the coolest variant of Spider-Man ever created. Via Spider-Verse has high expectations to live up to, but the trailers and trailers so far indicate that this sequel can not only meet them, but exceed them.
Flash (June 16)

How to solve a problem like Flash? On the one hand, you have a movie that has all the ingredients for a flop. It was stuck in development hell for almost a decade. It had multiple directors (Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa and the duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who just made a great movie Dungeons and Dragons film) and more than a dozen writers. Both WB and DC went through endless rounds of creative executive changes, resulting in tone, vision, and story. Flash constantly changing. Worst of all, the lead star, Ezra Miller, went through a very public mental health crisis, which included the actor allegedly committing multiple crimes.
Further Flash It is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Because? Well, it has the potential to be very, very good. The current (and last) director is Andy Muschietti, who did excellent big-screen versions of Stephen King. He in 2017 and 2019. Scattered reports indicate that early tentative reviews of the film compared to dark Knight, and we all know how great that movie turned out. Several trailers and clips hint at the film leaning heavily on Michael Keaton’s Batman, which isn’t a bad thing since DC’s version of him is still very popular. Most likely, yes Flash it will turn out to be disappointing and will still be high (this is a DCEU movie, after all), but with Tom Cruise and now Stephen King praising the movie, there’s an even better chance it’s going to be really good.
Asteroid City (June 16)

Nearly 30 years after making his first film, Wes Anderson has carved out such a unique place for himself in modern cinema that everyone, even people who haven’t seen his work, knows exactly what his visual style is, even going so far as to use AI to replicate or parody your “brand” with other similar IPs Star Wars. The real thing returns this summer with asteroid citya very Wes Anderson-esque movie, complete with deliberately false backgrounds and characters saying mundane things in dry, callous tones.
The plot concerns an eclectic group of strangers who gather in the titular city to investigate a UFO sighting. An all-star cast headlined by Steve Carrell, Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson, a retro ’60s look and Anderson’s light touch of comedy make asteroid city for all those who are looking for an alternative to meaningless knocking.
Without Anger (June 23)

BedPhoebe Waller-Bridge as Indy’s godson, Mads Mikkelsen as (who else?) a German villain, and Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, and Toby Jones as Doctor Jones’s friends. The film recently debuted at Cannes to a muted reception, but that may not matter since it’s Ford’s last turn since his most iconic character deserves at least one theatrical viewing.
