You’ll never guess how much the ‘Wayne’s World’ AMC Pacer sold for

Yes, it’s a soulful, headbanging scene from 1992 Wayne’s World, which proved so popular that the song climbed the charts 17 years after its release. The film also featured a custom 1976 AMC Pacer owned by Garth Algaro, played by Dana Carvey. And now the small hatchback has been auctioned and sold.

On Saturday, the car sold for a surprising $37,400 (including commission) to a buyer on the spot. Swing!

The car and its theme song also rose to fame in the video game world when they appeared as “Rhapsody” in Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned, Grand Theft Auto V, and Grand Theft Auto Online. IN GTA IV, a photo of Wayne and Garth can be seen on the dashboard if the player zooms in.

This car also appeared, in an unrestored state, in one episode Pawn Starswhere it sold for $9,500.

The AMC Pacer was introduced in 1975 as an alternative to the underpowered, oversized cars of the Weakness era. It was designed to maximize interior space and was advertised as “The First Wide Small Car”. The initial inline-six was upgraded to a more powerful one in 1976, with the V8 coming later.

The “Mirth-Mobile,” as Garth’s car is called, has a larger 4.2-liter I6 engine mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. Before you scoff at the slushbox, think about how much easier it will be to swing without the use of a club and a third pedal.

The hatchback was modified for the film inside and out. Baby blue paint covered the original yellow exterior, which was then decorated with flame decals. Aftermarket rims replaced the factory steel rims in the rear. Steel plates have been added to support the camera, as well as towing hooks.

A hole in the roof made it possible to install the famous red rope licorice dispenser. Interior modifications were made to fit the speaker boxes into the rear passenger compartment and trunk. Components were removed from the control panel to make room for the cup dispenser.

The Pacer underwent an extensive restoration before going up for auction. The exterior is stripped and repainted, while the bumpers and wheels are chrome plated. The seats and headliner have been reupholstered, and the interior panels have been refinished.

On the mechanical side, the front end was rebuilt, while the exhaust, water pump, power steering pump, alternator, battery, belts and hoses were replaced.

While we don’t know the exact condition of Wayne’s World Pacer, Hagerty estimates a stock 1976 Pacer at $8,500. Please note that we are quoting the price of the car in “Excellent” condition, as befits the situation.

Did the customer overpay? It depends how you look at it. The car itself may be worth much less than it was, but adding value based on the film’s provenance is tricky. It’s worth what someone is willing to pay. Maybe the customer is a big fan Wayne’s World franchises or maybe someone who buys movie cars in general.

Either way, we hope the winner of the bid does their best to keep the scene alive in the comfort of this tiny little car.
