After assaulting ex-girlfriend Kristin Evans in 2021, former NFL star Zac Stacy received six months in prison and a year of probation.
Evans and a friend posted a video of the attack, captured by a home security camera, online in November 2021. The video shows her being thrown across the TV and to the floor in front of their child, who was 5 months old at the time.
According to NBC regional station WESH, former St. Louis Ramsa is believed to have left Florida after the order was issued. He was arrested at Orlando International Airport on arrival a week later and charged with aggravated assault and misdemeanor.
Stacy, 31, was charged with assault, but those charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty earlier this month in Orange County, Florida, according to WESH.
He was sentenced to six months in prison and a year of probation on Monday when he appeared in Orange County court.
Even so, Evans, who has a child named ZJ with Stacy, responded to the verdict early Tuesday on Instagram and called for mental health care instead of jail.
In the video’s title, she says that “those who are willing to put in the effort to be better deserve a chance to show that they can be better.”
According to Evans, Stacy initially “showed no sign of remorse” after the 2021 incident, and “he fled to another state, so I posted the video to arrest him.”
But she says the former NFL running again has dramatically improved his life since then. He decided to change, Evans said. He managed to dramatically change his behavior and communication with cognitive behavioral therapy. Over the past six months, he has shown steady progress and our son enjoys hanging out with him.
Evans went on to say that many advocates of severe sentences also don’t see the challenge that domestic violence victims face in balancing their safety “with what is right for our children.”
For the rest of my life, I have to socialize with this man, exchange children with him, and raise children with him, Evans said. She added that she “doesn’t support prison” because of “lack of resources, lack of rehabilitation, lack of mental health education and the psychological impact it can have on our son, who has developed a relationship with his father.”
