A sexual predator labeled a “danger to every woman” has been sentenced to at least 38 years in prison for killing Zara Aleena as she walked home from a night out. Jordan McSweeney, 29, admitted murdering and sexually assaulting the 35-year-old law graduate in Ilford, east London, in the late-night attack in June. McSweeney fatally kicked and stomped her, after following several other women that night.
The judge said his refusal to take the stand showed he had “no backbone”. In a televised sentencing, Madam Justice Cheema-Grubb told the Old Bailey that McSweeney – who did not appear from the courtroom – carried out the attack. with “bad thinking”.
Sentencing him to a mandatory life sentence, the judge said she did not believe McSweeney’s actions on the night of the killing were “pathological”. She described him as a “disgusting and deeply violent man”. Madam Justice Cheema-Grubb said of the attack: “It was a sharp and sudden escalation of violence that had been simmering in his life for many years.”
McSweeney also received a four-year prison sentence for sexual assault, which will run concurrently. The defendant, originally from Dagenham, East London, had only recently been released from prison when he committed the attack. He received 28 convictions for 69 offenses dating back to 2006, including racist offenses and everything from burglary to assaulting police.
McSweeney was found guilty in 2010 of assaulting a young woman and leaving her with a swollen eye. He was just a teenager at the time. Eleven years later, he became the target of a restraining order that prohibited him from talking to the other victim.
After the June 26 attack—which began at around 02:15 BST—Ms. Aleena was found by the couple in a driveway in Cranbrook Road, according to evidence presented at the Old Bailey. She had trouble breathing due to the 46 different injuries she sustained during the nine-minute beating.
The 35-year-old received medical attention for more than an hour on the pavement before being taken to the Royal London Hospital. She passed away later that morning.
